FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS RECOVERY COACHING?

Addiction Recovery Coaching services fall somewhere between those of an addiction counselor and an A.A. sponsor, although it is neither. Unlike an addiction counselor/therapist, a Recovery Coach's duties don't involve mental evaluations or psychological counseling, while an A.A. sponsors primary responsibility is to teach A.A.'s 12 Steps and little more. Simply put, Recovery Coaching focuses not on an addict's weaknesses, but on his or her strengths. By focusing on a client's assets and strengths, the Recovery Coach helps people to identify and remove obstacles blocking the path to recovery and assists them in getting their lives back on track. Rather than dictating what the addict must do, a Recovery Coach helps the client identify his or her own strengths, interests and goals. The Recovery Coach then works with the client to create a personalized step-by-step plan to achieve their goals. This approach empowers you to take control of your life and your recovery.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A RECOVERY COACH?

Addiction is something that has affected my life in many ways. As a hardcore alcoholic and drug user for 20 years, I learned about addiction the hard way. In the process, I lost a sister and two best friends to alcohol and/or drugs. I was more fortunate to make a full recovery and realized that helping others overcome addiction is my life mission.

WHAT ARE YOUR QUALIFICATIONS?

In addition to personal experience with addiction and recovery, I've completed training through Harold Jonas, a counseling professional and pioneer in the recovery coaching field, and also a graduate of the World Coaching Institute, which offers some of the most comprehensive recovery coaching curriculum available anywhere. Additionally, I wrote and published a self-help addiction recovery book called 3 Steps To Recovery, which is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO RECOVERY COACHING?

One of my favorite words is SIMPLE. Addiction recovery is like most things in life - it can be as simple or as complicated as we make it. I've never met an addict that doesn't tend to complicate things. It's one of the reasons we become addicts. But recovery doesn't have to be that way. You'll find my approach to be friendly, down-to-earth, and tailored to your individual needs. As your guide to beating addiction, we're in it together. I walk side-by-side with you every step of the way. My approach is open-minded, nonjudgmental, and simple -  the focus is on pointing you in the right direction, not pointing out your flaws and imperfections.

HOW DO SESSIONS WORK?

We start with a free consultation, which runs about half an hour. The free consultation is a way for us to get to know one another and to be sure we make a good fit. If we decide to work together, we'll meet for 40 minutes, one day per week.  Most sessions are held over the phone, but can also be done using video chat or instant messenger, depending on your personal preference. Unlimited e-mail communication is included between sessions. The beauty of electronic sessions is that they can be done from the comfort of your home, office, or even on the go. All that's required is a quiet spot and a telephone or internet connection, which can be wired or wireless. Thanks to the latest advances in technology, meeting for sessions has never been easier.

WHAT TYPES OF ADDICTION DO YOU WORK WITH?

I can help you with any type of addiction - alcohol, drugs, gambling, shopping, and food addiction, to name a few.

I RECENTLY COMPLETED REHAB. HOW CAN YOU HELP ME?

An estimated 60-80% of patients will relapse after treatment. Most people relapse because they have little or no aftercare support when returning to the real world. The stress of strained relationships, employment, or finances has caused many people in early recovery to fail. You've invested too much time and hard work in your recovery to lose it all again. An increasing number of rehab clinics now offer Recovery Coaching as an aftercare option for people leaving treatment. As your recovery coach, my job is to help you get on the right track in and help you stay there.

I'M CURRENTLY STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION ALONE.

CAN YOU HELP ME?

Absolutely. All you need is a sincere desire to stop and I can help you, whether it's finding medical assistance, rehab, or other assistance. If you've been through a treatment program, but are still struggling, we will design a plan tailored to fit your needs.
